The Big Name..

When you open your eyes and focus on something particular, everything else is just a blur. That is pretty much what the aperture does for the camera in a more technical sense.

I recently got myself a new lens, the Sigma 30mm f1.4. This might seem like a bunch of numbers that doesn't make sense to a beginner. Trust me, I was there only a few months ago but now I am in a position to explain this to you.

30mm is the focal length of the lens which means the lens is 30mm away from the sensor on my camera. The shorter the focal length, the wider the image and hence the longer the focal length, the narrower the image. The best way to explain this would be on a camera that has a zoom lens or any digital camera that has optical zoom. If you zoom all the way out, the front of the lens is closer to the sensor of your camera so you get a wider perspective of the picture you're taking. However, if you zoom in, you get a narrower perspective.

f1.4 is the aperture of the lens. This is the part of the lens that opens and closes to control the amount of light you would like to let in to your camera. The larger the aperture (1.4 in this instance) would bring in a lot of light so that you can focus on something particular and give the picture that cool blurry effect in the background or foreground.

When you see that cool portrait picture of a model who is in clear focus but everything behind them is a blur, the most likely case is that the photographer is using a lens with a large aperture to get this effect. The coolest ones are night photography with fairy lights, fireworks, a fun fair or just the street lights in the background. This is also sometimes used in wedding photography to isolate the couple so that the audience is drawn to the couple.

The picture above is an example of what a big aperture can do by only focusing on the plants. In the picture below, I held and old CD just under my lens and focused on the background so that I could get this cool blur rainbow effect to block out the pavement. Let me know what you think in the comments.
